A heat pump is an air conditioner and looks just like one.  Heat pumps are equipped with several additional components.  These components allow a heat pump to reverse the flow of refrigerant so during the winter, heat is added to the inside of your house.  Heat produced by a mechanical heat pump is cheaper than gas or electric strip heat.  A heat pumps cheaper cost of running, along with incentives given by the electric utility companies, have been reasons why so many are being installed.
